Adaptive Bias Control

Optimum amp performance under all conditions

The Challenge

In a conventional Class AB amplifier, bias current is usually set once only, by an engineer with a potentiometer, at the point of building the product. However, due to variations in individual transistors, changing temperatures during use, and age of the components, this bias current can, and does, drift quite far from ideal over the lifespan of the amplifier.

The Solution

To circumvent this challenge in our latest generation of amplifiers, we have developed our original Adaptive Bias Control technology. We establish the optimum bias point dynamically and in real-time by measuring, sampling and digitising the current supplied to the output transistors. This data is passed to an FPGA, which calculates the bias corresponding to these measured current levels, and implements a digital control loop to hold this measured bias point constant for each individual transistor.

Using this method, we can ensure the optimum bias is applied and persistently adjusted to be ideal – at any temperature, regardless of volume or demanding dynamic changes in the source material – for the duration of the product’s lifespan.

With Adaptive Bias Control we have conclusively solved the traditional problems inherent to Class AB amplifier design.

360 Exakt Integrated Loudspeakers with Adaptive Bias Control

A 3-channel Class AB amplifier featuring Adaptive Bias control is critical to the superlative performance of the tweeter, midrange, and upper bass drive units which collectively comprise the 360 Array.

Transistor crossover distortion is eliminated from the amplifier, ensuring all three channels behave at their absolute optimum in all scenarios – for all types of music, at all listening levels, and at all times.

Klimax Solo 800 with Adaptive Bias Control

In our reference mono power amplifier – Klimax Solo 800 – we establish the ideal bias current for each of the amp’s sixteen output transistors dynamically and in real-time by measuring, sampling and digitising the current supplied to them.

A digital control loop then implements and persistently adjusts this optimum bias current for each individual transistor specifically; negating crossover distortion at any temperature – regardless of volume or demanding dynamic changes in music – for the entirety of the amp’s life.
